Kansas City Chiefs –
The Chiefs made a few moves in the offseason but nothing too extreme. They are projected to have a similar season to last year’s campaign in a competitive AFC West division. They have an offensive line that does a pretty good job of protecting the sluggish Alex Smith and they should be able to do an effective job in giving Smith time to throw. However, the Chiefs’ O-line will have to work extra hard if they are going to be able to get Spenser Ware going against New England’s stingy run defense.
This would be a great spot for Ware to show that he is the real deal by finding holes and keeping the potent New England offense on the side lines. He averaged a respectable 4.3 yards per carry in 2016 although he only hit pay dirt 3 times. With Jeremy Maclin leaving, Smith will need his secondary receivers to find room so that he isn’t forced to predictably target Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. New England’s defense is far too experienced to allow two guys to have their way.
On the defensive side of things, the Chiefs have their share of playmakers. In 2016, Marcus Peters registered 6 picks while Eric Berry had 4 interceptions and ran two of them back for touchdowns. The Chiefs finished the season with 18 picks which tied them for the number one spot with Baltimore and San Diego. The pass rush is a different story. Even though Dee Ford led the team with 10 sacks and forced a fumble, the defense ended up with just 28 sacks on the year which ranked them 28th in that department. They cannot give Tom Brady too much time or he will eat them alive.
New England Patriots –
Tom Brady is getting old and he is getting slower. Of course, Brady’s never been the most mobile guy but look at what he’s done. He was nothing short of terrific after returning from suspension last year and he just might have better options this year. Gronkowski is supposedly healthy but, even if he isn’t, their receiving core got a boost with the addition of Brandon Cooks. Brady could also make Chris Hogan look like a star. One of the unknowns on New England’s offense is their running back situation after losing Blount in the off season. They have 3 or 4 guys that will battle for carries and only time will tell how they will manage. The organization seems to be keen on Mike Gillislee who averaged an impressive 5.7 yards per carry in a limited role over the past 2 seasons in Buffalo. If he can keep up to that level then people will forget about LeGarrette Blount pretty quickly. The New England offense was the third-highest scoring team in 2016 and they allowed the fewest points by a pretty significant margin.
The defense might not rank highly in sacks or interceptions. They might not even be that great when it comes to stuffing teams on 3rd down but they get the job done in a big way last year. They are one of the hardest teams to run against and opposing quarterbacks completed just 61.7% of their passes against them. With Malcolm Butler and the newly-acquired Stephon Gilmore on the corners along with safeties Devon McCourty and Pat Chung, the secondary is intimidating. Add in a solid set of linebackers and strong defensive line and you just might be looking at the best defense in the league for 2017.
